Do I love TV-series?

For this week we were supposed to write about our thoughts about TV-series and our relationship to them.

When I started to think back to my childhood and what kind of TV-series or programs I loved, I hit me…. “Fem myror är fler än fyra elefanter”, that is my first memory and one of the strongest. I was four or five years old when SVT started to send the show, and me and my friend never missed a part. My parents gave us paper and crayons so that we could follow, writing the letters and numbers. As a result of this I could read and write quite well when I started the first grade. I have seen the program today and I still love it as much as I did when I was five. The reason I love it is the fact that the viewer actually learns something, they had a thought when they made the programs back in the seventies.

Today, well there is one TV-series I totally adore, Midsummer murders. I know, it is probably just me and a couple of old ladies who watches that series. I have never missed a single episode, am I away for vacation I will set the video. There is just one problem with this series, SVT does only send it during the summers. How can they do this to me (and all the old ladies)?

I have tried to explain to my friends why I am such a big fan of “Midsummer murders”. I think I like it for two reasons, first of all, the language. I really like to watch films and TV-series from Britan, especially the Southern parts. I watch the episode and just dream away, seeing myself in the local pub. The other reason is the fact I like criminal dramas. Seeing how someone was killed doesn’t appeal to me, I want to know why.

What about the winter? I have to confess, there are some TV-series that I watch. “Desperate housewife” is one of them, of course people dies in this series, but it is not the main attraction. I can watch it peacefully with a nice cup of tea.

There is one thing I have to admit, programs about interior design, gardens and cooking… when these shows are on I really can´t turn off the TV. I just love them, and it got even better last week when “Leila på landet” started. This kind of TV-series appeal to me in the same way as “Fem myror….” did. I actually learn something. I do try the recipe, learns about my garden, what kind of flowers I can have etc. I do not have to feel guilty when I lay on the sofa watching TV; after all, it is educational.

Look at my garden, when friends say that I watch these shows too much, I don’t agree! I need help organizing things here.

So, as an answer to my question in the beginning, YES I love TV-series.

  1. Petra,
I love your text. It is very good written and I read it with joy. I think that the paragraphing is perfect and you handle the connecting words very good. You have followed the train of thought in your text and I can´t find anything to change at all.

Your head line is good and you answer the question in the last paragraph which I liked very much. Above all, I liked the pictures which made your story more living.

You can feel proud of this blog, good work!

  3. Dear petra,

I Love to read yor blog. You write from your heart and that makes the text special!

In your second paragraph yor write about your first TV memorie. I think it is good that you write about why you liked it so much, and still does.

Your third and fourth paragrap is about the series that you adore today. You have put them in two paragraphs, and I think that is ok beasause they act on different parts.

I agree with you in yor sixth paragraph; to lay on the sofa wathing tv can be educational, which is great!

Your language is good and it is easy to follow your text. Your paragraphing is also good, I think.

    I like your photos!

    Best regards,
    Frida

  4. Dear Petra,

Thanks for your blog! I have to agree with you about gardening and interior design programmes – they keep me hooked too! As to Midsummer Murders, I’m in with the little old ladies!

As to the structure of your text, most of your paragraphs make sense. I just wonder whether it would have been better to join up the two paragraphs about “Midsummer Murders”, since they deal with one and the same topic. Also, the paragraph about what you watch during winter is a bit short. At the same time, I think you could have chosen a more informative topic sentence there. The paragraph before the picture of your house (very nice, by the way (apart from the garden)!) could, I think have been joined up with the preceding paragraph. Then it could have started “As you can tell from my garden...” or the alike.

As to your introduction, avoid saying what you are going to write about. Rather, say something interesting, like a statement or a question, that can work as a topic sentence and at the same time will catch the interest of the reader. When it comes to your final sentence, I think it would have been good if you had made it a whole paragraph. Then you could have summed up things in a couple of sentences before writing your final sentence.

When it comes to links, you do use a few, like the “two reasons” in the paragraph on why you like “Midsummer Murders”: “first of all” and “the other reason”. Nice! However, you might want to look at the handout with links again and, for next time, see if you can make more use of them.

As to language, think about subject-verb agreement (as in “it is probably just me and a couple of old ladies who watches that series”, where you should have “watch” instead. Also, check up on when to use “does”. In “SVT does only send it during the summers” you shouldn’t use it: “SVT only shows it /broadcasts it...”. In ““Desperate housewife” is one of them, of course people dies in this series, but it is not the main attraction” you have a run-on sentence, and there should have been a full stop after “D.H. is one of them. Of course,...”. You also have a subject-verb agreement error in that sentence: it should be “people die”. Lastly, the sentence “There is one thing I have to admit, programs about interior design, gardens and cooking… when these shows are on I really can´t turn off the TV.” Is hard to follow. It might have been better to say something like “I have to admit that when there are programs about... I really can’t switch off the TV”.

By the way, have you watched the British gardening show that is on on Fridays at 9.30? Jolly good!

    Best,
    Marika
